Glory Children’s Center – Kisii, Kenya
By Edna Shaffer
I am so happy and excited this morning over the photos and
histories of our fifty-six new children at Glory Center (thanks
Logan), that I can hardly concentrate on writing. To look at
these beautiful little people, some as young as three years old,
stirs me to tears. It also challenges me because I realize we have
the ability to move them from their previous lives of despair to
lives of beauty and promise. There is no higher calling. I do be-
lieve God puts these opportunities in front of us because it en-
riches our walk with Him. As we see His faithfulness to us, we
learn what it means to be faithful
to “the least of these.”
Please pray with me, and the
rest of our staff, that hearts will be
opened and these tiny children of
God will be welcomed into our
lives. I am so blessed with my
fourteen healthy grandchildren,
and eighteen great-grandchildren,
that I have to give out of gratitude
for these blessings. As you may
have guessed by now, I am so in
love with these children I’d
love to
adopt them all. How I wish!
We also received letters this
week from the sponsored children to their sponsors, which most
of you have received by now. There are two or three of you
whose letters will be in the next batch. I was struck by their grati-
tude over your concern and support; their great joy over being
part of your families; and how they appreciate your letters, pho-
tos and gifts. There were pages of sweet pictures laboriously
drawn by the little preschoolers. There were also letters written
by some of those as yet unsponsored, telling of their longing for a
sponsor. I don’t believe there was one letter that didn’t praise
Pastor Moses and his wife Prisca for the love and compassion
that has brought them the sense of having the security of loving
parents. These children who have not known love can receive
and give it so freely. What a miracle! Some letters said, “Now
there is no more caning, or begging for food, or sleeping on the
streets. Now we have a home and parents!” Their biggest thrills
are to live at the orphanage and to go to school. Their gratitude
for the most basic necessities is so overwhelming. As one little
guy put it, “I am as happy as a king!” This is what your sponsor-
ship does for them. Enough said?
Read it in their own words in this letter:
“Dear Mum and Dad,
“I am so happy to write this letter to you, hoping you are
okay. Here in Kenya we are very fine under the Lord’s almighty
care. How is your family? I am really missing the children, they
are so healthy and beautiful. When I look at them in the photos
you sent I feel I am being loved by you.
“I am writing this letter to you to pass greetings and say thank
you very much for the commitment and investment you always
put in me. I am really glad with your assistance, and through you
my life will prosper both spiritually and academically.
“I always pray to God to assist you in everything you do.
Let Him bless the work of your hands so you will continue help-
ing the needy. I know God has a good plan for your life. Pray
that I will not fall into Satan’s temptations but walk in righ-
teousness always.
“You are so special to me and to God also. I love you. Stay
with God.

Glory Center is a bustling place with a total of one hun-
dred three children plus Moses and Prisca and their family,
and all the wonderful workers. In Prisca’s e-mail she told us
that all of the thirty-two children who were
ill have recovered and now they are all vac-
cinated. She sends thanks to all the spon-
sors and donors who sent extra money for
medical expenses during that stressful time.
She writes, “I thank God that we have man-
aged to feed all the new children and thank
him for all he does for us. For now our home
is very full and we need a bigger home
soon.” (This may be the understatement of
the year!) The good news is, the new or-
phanage is on the way! It all just takes time,
prayer, hard work and lots of money. It
seems to drag when you need it yesterday.
The staff is as careful as they can be when it
comes to spending your funds, and there are so many things to
consider when you are making decisions half-a-world away.
Prisca thanks you for the money you sent for famine relief
saying, “This is God’s love doing this and may God bless you
very much; you saved many lives.” She also expressed the need
for clothing for the new fifty-six, since they arrived at the or-
phanage with just what they had on their little backs.
One of the new children who needs a sponsor is
eight-year-old Brian Juma. Some
wicked men came to his home in the
night and attacked his family, killing his
parents. Brian’s sister, now thirteen
years old, narrowly escaped with her
life. Since that time, Brian and his sis-
ter, Vane, have been treated as slaves in
the places where they have stayed. We
are glad they have found a home at
Glory Center. Vane has already been
sponsored and we are looking forward
to soon placing Brian with a loving
family as well.
Blessing to you all! We pray that
you will work with us to accomplish these tasks before us. We
cannot fail these children. I hope that next month I can report
that the new orphanage is closer to a reality. In the meantime, if
you are interested in making one of these fifty-six new children
a member of your family, please contact me and together we
will select your new “baby.”
