The Last Word
Where is God?
By Esther McDaniel
Where is God when people are being
hacked and torched, young boys are be-
ing trained in brutality and violence,
young girls are being stolen for use as
sex slaves, and thousands of children are
being orphaned by AIDS? Why doesn’t
He do something to stop the carnage? Is
He blind? Is He deaf? Doesn’t He care?
These are important questions!
They deserve an answer.
Where was God when all the Israel-
ite baby boys were to be drowned in the
river? Were the parents of Moses the
only righteous people He had left?
Where was God when Daniel was
thrown into the lion’s den and when his
three friends were thrown into the fiery
furnace? “He was with them,” you say.
“They were delivered without a scratch.”
But where was God when the head of
John the Baptist was brought to Herod
in a charger? And where was He when
His servant Steven was stoned to
death? What about the Dark Ages when
so many of His people were burned at
the stake or thrown to the lions in the
coliseums. Where was He then?
Where was God when His only be-
gotten Son hung on the cross broken,
bleeding, dying and crying out in His ag-
ony, “My God, my God, why hast thou
forsaken me?” Had God really forsaken
His Son? No! He had not. Surely His
heart was nearly torn in two when He
heard those piercing words fall from the
lips of His dear Son. But He understood
the plan, and He knew He would call
Him forth in triumph in a short time. He
knew that the death of His Son would
ensure the end of Satan’s reign of sin
and bloodshed and pave the way for His
people to live with Him eternally in a sin-
free, even heavenly environment.
God has a plan. He knows that His
people will never understand the deadly
nature of sin and the enormity of the sin
problem if He were to jump in to inter-
vene in every situation. So He rescues a
“Moses” here and a “Daniel” there,
sometimes using you and me as His in-
struments of rescue just as He used
Pharoah’s daughter to rescue the baby
Moses from the river. And He sacrifices
a “John the Baptist” here and a “Ste-
phen” there when He sees that it will
best fulfill His plan.
Jesus has said: “The servant is not
greater than his lord. If they have perse-
cuted me, they will also persecute you.”
“These things I have spoken unto you,
that in me ye might have peace. In the
world ye shall have tribulation: but be of
good cheer; I have overcome the world.”
“I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”
God has chosen us as His ambas-
sadors today, to show His love in the
midst of disaster and genocide. He has
promised to fill us with His Spirit of Love
and enable us to work as Jesus did
when He walked the streets of Galilee,
bringing hope and courage and show-
ing the love of His Father to the people
of His generation.
The needs are great but so is our
God! In cooperation with Him, miracles
are taking place. Children are being res-
cued who will sing praises to God
throughout eternity. What a legacy is
ours!
